Player of the Year: Blake Cushingberry, Romeo

The MAC MVP two years in a row and one of the states top players. Romeo has won three straight MAC red titles and back-to-back district titles with Cushingberry as its star player. He finishes his Romeo career as the schools all-time leader in games played, points, rebounds, field goals made, three point field goals made and free throws made.

 

Coach of the Year: Jeff Verkeyn, Roseville

With Roseville picked by many to finish last in the MAC blue, Verkeyn molded and motivated a young group of Panthers that featured three underclassmen in the starting line-up and led them to a MAC blue title and a 15 win season. The Panthers continued to be counted out and Verkeyn continued to lead them to victory.

 

Team of the Year: Romeo Bulldogs

The Bulldogs made history this year becoming the first team ever to record three consecutive outright championships in the conferences top division. Led by seniors Blake Cushingberry, Nick Kosovich and Brent Newsom the Romeo went 17-3 during the regular season and won their second consecutive district for the first time in over 40 years at Romeo. 

ALL-Macomb Area Conference First Team

 

Jay Thames                            Port Huron Northern                        6’9”                 Senior             Center

Averaged 17.2 ppg 10.1 rpg and 3.0 bpg while shooting almost 80% from the line. Scored 30 points against Brandon.

 

Nick Carreri                          L’Anse Creuse                                   6’7”                 Senior             Forward

Raised his game as a Senior; averaged 21.2 ppg 13.1 rpg 3.3 bpg & 3.0 apg. Had 38 points and 18 rebounds vs. Clintondale.

Quentin Jones                       South Lake                                         6’6”                 Senior             Forward

MAC Blue MVP; Led team to three straight league titles. Averaged 20.7 ppg 8 rpg and 4 spg. Scored 33 points vs. Cousino.

 

Blake Cushingberry             Romeo                                                6’4”                 Senior             Forward

MAC Red MVP; Averaged 24.6 ppg 10.8 rpg 4.4 apg and 3.2 spg for 17-3 MAC red champs. Scored 40 points vs. Lake Orion

 

Kyle Hunt                              Henry Ford II                                    6’3”                 Senior             Guard

MAC White MVP; Averaged 17.9 ppg 9.6 rpg 3.7 apg 3.2 spg for back-2-back MAC white champs. Season high 35 points.

 

ALL-Macomb Area Conference Second Team

 

Nate King                              Henry Ford II                         6’4”                 Senior                         Forward

Averaged 16.7 points & 6.6 rebounds while playing a key role on the defensive end for the MAC white Co-Champs.

 

Brandon Gouch                     Roseville                                6’3”                 Sophomore                 Forward

Averaged 18.7 ppg 6 rpg and 4 apg for MAC Blue Co-Champs; Scored 37 points in win over eventual co-champ South Lake.

 

Willie Cruz                            L’Anse Creuse                       6’3”                 Junior                         Forward

One of the MAC purest scorers; elevates his game in crunch time; Averaged 20.2 points 8.4 rebounds and 3.3 assists.

 

Chris Lemm                           Chippewa Valley                  5’11”               Senior                         Guard

The Big Reds top scorer the last two years; Averaged 19.7 ppg 5 rpg 4 spg & 3 apg this year. Scored 34 vs. Lathrup

 

Nick Kosovich                       Romeo                                    6’2”                 Senior                         Guard

Averaged 15.5 points, 4 rpg, 5.5 apg and 2.6 spg while shooting over 50% from the field.  Had 21 points & 6 assists @ CV

 

Erik Thompson                      L’Anse Creuse North           5’11”               Senior                         Guard

4-year starter overcame injuries and led Crusaders to a share of MAC white title. Averaged 13.8 ppg, 4 rpg, 4.6 apg & 3.3 spg.

 

ALL-Macomb Area Conference Third Team

 

Nick Waller                           Grosse Pointe North             6’7”                 Senior             Forward

Led Norsemen is scoring, rebounding & Blocks. One of the most versatile big men in the conference. Averaged 16.2 ppg

 

Bernard Edwards                  Warren Cousino                    6’5”                 Senior             Forward

Three year starter improved his average every year. As a senior scored 16.7 ppg. Had 26 points in win over Woods-Tower.

 

Mike Hollingsworth             Utica                                       6’0”                 Junior             Guard

Scoring machine lead the balanced chieftains in that category.  Averaged 15.2 ppg while sinking over 40 three pointers.

 

Mike Nieman                        L’Anse Creuse North           5’10”               Senior             Guard

Scored 39 points to carry team to win over Cousino. Steady senior leader and second on the team at 11.8 ppg and 3.1 apg

 

Sammy Hines                          Warren Fitzgerald                 5’9”                 Senior             Guard

Top scorer and playmaker for the Spartans; Averaged 14.7 ppg and over 5 apg. Had 22 points vs. Roseville, ED and Clintondale.

 

ALL-Macomb Area Conference Fourth Team

 

Matt Balkema                          Warren Cousino                    6’9”                 Junior             Center

Game progressed greatly this year. A double-double threat each night. Averaged 13.8 ppg and 10 rpg tops on the Patriots.

 

Rick Doran                            Chippewa Valley                  6’7”                 Senior             Forward

Steadily improved all season ending the year as a legit second option. Impressive overall numbers; 10.8 ppg 9 rpg & 3 bpg

 

Chuck Barone                        Eisenhower                            5’11”               Senior             Forward

Tough as nails senior played with outstanding intensity. The Eagles top scorer at 11.1 ppg; Had 22 points 12 rebounds @ LC.

 

Justin Brege                          Eisenhower                            6’3”                 Senior             Guard

Eisenhower’s 2nd leading scorer at 10.1 ppg. Three year varsity player played several positions for the team. Had 23 vs. CV.

 

Sam Seppo                             Port Huron                             6’0”                 Senior             Guard

The Big Reds top scorer the last two years; helped improve league record by 5 wins from last season. Averaged 16.9 ppg

 

ALL-Macomb Area Conference Fifth Team

 

Nate Saliga                            Romeo                                      6’7”                 Junior             Center

Inside force for MAC Red champs. Averaged 9.8 ppg 7.8 rpg & 2.2 bpg. Recorded 6 double-doubles in 1st season as starter.

 

Montez Richardson              East Detroit                           6’3”                 Senior             Forward

Led Shamrocks in scoring in his only season in the MAC.  Averaged 13.4 ppg. Had 23 points in crossover win vs. Stevenson

 

Jay Kopecki                           Warren Fitzgerald                 6’3”                 Senior             Forward         

1st year MAC player was the second leading scorer & one of the most valuable pieces for the Spartans. Averaged 12.8 ppg

 

John Irons                             Stevenson                              6’0”                 Senior             Guard

One of the best pure shooters in the conference. Averaged 15.4 ppg despite being keyed on by opponent’s defenses.

 

Eric Mack                               Roseville                                5’11”               Senior             Guard

Senior shooting specialist and captain of youthful Panthers. Averaged 14.4 ppg for the surprise MAC Blue Co-Champs.

 

 

ALL-Macomb Area Conference Sixth Team

 

Matt Carden                          Fraser                                     6’5”                 Junior             Center

Made great progress again this season; was the centerpiece on both ends of the court. Averaged 12.9 ppg and 6 rpg.

 

Spencer Thomas                   Port Huron Northern              6’2”                 Senior             Forward

Our Most Improved Player in the white. Averaged 11.1 ppg second on the Huskies & 4.1 rpg Had 20 vs. Grosse Pointe South.

 

James Soros                           Grosse Pointe South             6’3”                 Senior             Forward

Three year starter was leading scorer for the Blue Devils at 12.7 ppg. Scored 24 against Cousino and 21 versus Willow Run.

 

Matt Desmet                         Anchor Bay                            6’0”                 Senior             Guard

Averaged 14.6 ppg 4 rpg and 3 spg for Anchor Bay. Leading last two year; had 26 points in upset win over L’Anse Creuse.

 

Adam Desmet                       Anchor Bay                          5’11”               Senior             Guard

Averaged 14.1 ppg to go with 3 rpg and 3 apg. At his best playing against the MAC white in 4 games he scored 99 points.
